The only official figure available is the 2024 median salary: CHF 7,893 gross per month in Geneva. Any “2026 average salary” figure is therefore an extrapolation. Education has a greater impact than the canton: salaries range from CHF 5,294 for employees without a completed qualification to CHF 11,270 for those with a university degree, and reach CHF 14,400 for middle and senior managers. On a median salary, a B-permit resident keeps roughly CHF 5,400 per month after social contributions, withholding tax and health insurance. Salary negotiations should always be conducted in gross annual terms, never based on net income.

The median gross monthly salary in the canton of Geneva stands at CHF 7,893 for a 40-hour full-time position, according to the 2024 Swiss Earnings Structure Survey published by the cantonal statistical office (OCSTAT) in November 2025. That is CHF 869 above the Swiss median of CHF 7,024. Behind the headline figure, a university-educated manager in financial services and a shop assistant on the minimum wage live in two different economies. This article gives the benchmarks by sector, education level and profession, then converts gross pay into real purchasing power once rent and health insurance have been paid.

The reference figure, and why the average misleads you

A candidate who walks into an interview with "the average salary in Geneva is 9,000 francs" is in trouble from the first question. The figure exists, but it describes nobody. In Geneva, the standardised mean for men reaches CHF 10,489 while their median is CHF 7,961: the very high incomes in finance and commodity trading pull the mean up by 2,500 francs. At Fed Group we only quote the median, with its reference year. The mechanics of mean versus median are covered in our article on average and median salaries in Switzerland; here we stay on the canton.

Indicator (gross monthly, full time 40 h) Geneva Switzerland Source
Median salary, whole economy, 2024 CHF 7,893 CHF 7,024 OCSTAT / FSO, ESS 2024

Standardised mean women / men 2024 CHF 8,865 / 10,489 OCSTAT
First and ninth decile CHF 4,635 / 12,526 FSO, ESS 2024

Two points of method. The survey is biennial: the 2026 edition will not be published before 2027, and OCSTAT does not produce a 2025 or 2026 median. The amount includes social contributions, one twelfth of the 13th salary and non-periodic payments, but not exceptional bonuses. Comparing a 12-month fixed salary with the median therefore undervalues you by around 8%.

Geneva salary grid by profession

The cantonal median tells you whether an offer is off-market. To negotiate, you need to go down to the sector, then the role. The first grid reproduces the official OCSTAT 2024 medians; the second compiles the ranges we see on our Geneva assignments, supplemented with market data where we do not recruit the profession.

Official medians by sector, education and position

Criterion Category Gross median monthly 2024
Sector (Geneva) Financial services CHF 12,682
Wholesale trade, including commodity trading CHF 10,835
Restaurants / accommodation (Swiss median) CHF 4,744 / 4,715
Education (Geneva) University degree CHF 11,270
University of applied sciences (HES), higher vocational college CHF 9,152
Federal VET diploma (CFC) CHF 6,945
No completed vocational qualification CHF 5,294
Position (Geneva) Middle and senior managers CHF 14,400
Junior managers CHF 10,943
No management function CHF 6,887

What candidates often forget: the gap between a CFC and an HES degree is CHF 2,200 a month; the gap between an employee without management duties and a junior manager is CHF 4,000. No change of employer at equal level pays that much. In Geneva, continuing education is a salary investment, not a CV extra.

Amounts in CHF gross per year, 13th salary included, bonus excluded. For banking roles, our guide to bank jobs in Geneva (listed below) details the skills expected at each level. Our position: an experienced accountant who accepts CHF 78,000 in Geneva because "it is already far more than in France" leaves CHF 10,000 a year on the table. The local market pays at least 85,000 for someone who can close the books unsupervised.

What moves your salary in Geneva

Four variables explain most of the gaps at equivalent level. Here they are in order of their real weight, which is not the order candidates imagine.

  • Hierarchical position. Moving from no management role to junior manager is worth CHF 4,056 a month in Geneva. It is the most powerful lever, and the slowest: count five to eight years in finance and accounting.
  • Level of education. A federal diploma, a CAS in compliance or an HES degree obtained while working moves a profile from one line of the grid to the next. The classic mistake here is waiting for the employer to suggest it.
  • Permit and nationality, in both directions. At Swiss level, in senior positions, B-permit holders (CHF 13,090) and C-permit holders (CHF 11,966) earn more than Swiss nationals (CHF 10,989); without management duties, the picture reverses (CHF 6,765 for Swiss nationals, CHF 5,421 for B permits). A manager recruited abroad is paid at the international market rate; an unskilled employee recruited locally, at the local rate.
  • Gender, mostly at the extremes. In Geneva the median gap is only 2%, but women's mean salary is 15.5% below men's. Part-time work explains the bottom of the distribution, under-representation among very high earners explains the top. At equal qualification, a candidate who negotiates on sector data closes the gap; one who accepts the first offer reproduces it.

Company size and collective agreements come next. Collective labour agreements (CCTs) set an enforceable floor, but in Geneva they are rarely the ceiling: in banking, fiduciary firms and engineering, salaries are negotiated individually.

The Geneva minimum wage: CHF 24.59, and what it actually covers

Geneva was the first canton to introduce a statutory minimum wage by popular vote, on 1 November 2020, with the stated aim of fighting in-work poverty. The amount is indexed every year to the Geneva consumer price index. Since 1 January 2026 it stands at CHF 24.59 gross per hour, which is CHF 4,262.27 a month for a 40-hour week and CHF 4,368.82 for 41 hours, according to the reference figures published by the State of Geneva. Agriculture and horticulture have a derogatory minimum of CHF 18.07.

Effective date Gross hourly minimum Monthly equivalent at 40 h
1 November 2020 CHF 23.00 CHF 3,986.67
1 January 2021 CHF 23.14 CHF 4,010.93
1 January 2022 CHF 23.27 CHF 4,033.47
1 January 2023 CHF 24.00 CHF 4,160.00
1 January 2024 CHF 24.32 CHF 4,215.47
1 January 2025 CHF 24.48 CHF 4,243.20
1 January 2026 CHF 24.59 CHF 4,262.27

Source: State of Geneva, OCIRT. Monthly figures calculated on 52 weeks / 12 months. Three points employers check too late: the minimum applies to all work performed on Geneva territory, wherever the employer is based; night and Sunday supplements cannot be counted towards it; and since the vote of 8 March 2026, summer jobs may be paid at 75% of the minimum. Apprentices, supervised interns and au pairs under 18 remain outside its scope (art. 39J LIRT). From gross to net: the payslip of a Geneva employee on the median salary

Take a case built on the cantonal median. Yannis Berthoud, 31, management controller at a trading company in Plan-les-Ouates, living in Carouge on a B permit, single with no children. Contractual salary: CHF 94,716 gross over 13 months, i.e. CHF 7,893 a month annualised, exactly the Geneva median. Here is what leaves his gross pay each month, at the 2026 rates in force.

Payslip line Employee rate 2026 Monthly amount
Gross monthly salary CHF 7,893.00
AVS / AI / APG (old-age, disability, loss of earnings) 5.3% – CHF 418.33
Unemployment insurance (AC), up to CHF 148,200 a year 1.1% – CHF 86.82
Non-occupational accident insurance (LAA-ANP) ≈ 1.3% depending on insurer – CHF 102.61
LPP pension, employee share, age 25-34 (coordinated salary CHF 64,260, 7% credit) 3.5% of coordinated salary – CHF 187.43
Geneva cantonal maternity insurance (LAMat) 0.029% – CHF 2.29
Withholding tax, scale A0, Geneva annual model ≈ 14% (order of magnitude, AFC-GE) – CHF 1,105.00
Net paid into the account ≈ CHF 5,990
Average adult LAMal premium, Geneva 2026, paid outside the payslip – CHF 586.00
Actual disposable income ≈ CHF 5,400

The gross salary loses 24% before reaching the bank account, then another 7% with the health premium that the payslip never shows. That is the figure Yannis should compare with his rent, not the CHF 7,893 in the job advert. Two levers change the result: a CHF 7,258 payment into pillar 3a, deductible via quasi-resident status or an ordinary tax return, and a CHF 2,500 LAMal deductible that brings the premium down to around CHF 480 for someone in good health. The gross-to-net calculation for a G-permit cross-border worker follows the same contributions but a different health regime; we cover it in our article on the net salary of a cross-border worker in Switzerland.

Real purchasing power: Geneva versus Vaud and neighbouring France

Back to Yannis with his CHF 5,400. The average rent for a four-room flat on the open market in the canton was CHF 1,639 in May 2025 according to the cantonal rent statistics, but that average mixes twenty-year-old leases with recent ones. OCSTAT notes that new tenants paid 7.9% more than their predecessors between May 2025 and May 2026, and on the listings market a three-room flat in the city routinely exceeds CHF 2,200. Yannis, who is searching today, will budget CHF 2,000 to 2,400 for decent housing.

Monthly item Geneva, new lease What changes elsewhere
Rent, 3-room flat CHF 2,000 – 2,400 Lausanne: 15 to 25% less; neighbouring France: roughly half, in euros
Adult LAMal premium CHF 586 (FOPH average, Geneva 2026) Swiss adult average CHF 465.30; cross-border workers: frontier LAMal or French cover
Public transport Monthly unireso "Tout Genève" pass: CHF 70 Car unavoidable from most French communes
Food, one person CHF 500 – 700 Cross-border shopping is common among Geneva residents themselves
Income tax Withheld at source, Geneva scale Geneva cross-border workers: also withheld by Geneva, no option to be taxed in France instead

In practice, Yannis is left with CHF 1,800 to 2,300 a month once housing, health, transport and food are paid. Comfortable, yes; not the fortune that CHF 94,716 gross suggests from Paris or Lisbon. What we tell candidates weighing a Geneva offer against a Lausanne offer paying 8% less: run the numbers all the way to the money left over. Sometimes Lausanne wins.

Negotiating your salary in Geneva: our position

Salary negotiation in Geneva is factual and takes place on a gross annual basis. A recruiter who hears "I would like 6,000 net" understands that the candidate has not done the maths. These are the five points we prepare with every candidate before the second interview.

  • Start from the sector, not the canton. The financial services median (CHF 12,682) has nothing in common with retail. Salarium, the Federal Statistical Office tool, filters by sector, education, age and region.
  • State a gross annual figure with the number of instalments. "92,000 over 13" is a proposal; "7,000 a month" is an open question the employer will close in its own favour.
  • Check the collective agreement before talking numbers. In hospitality, finishing trades or retail, the contractual floor may exceed the cantonal minimum; in banking, there is none.
  • Price the package, not just the base. Employer LPP contributions above the legal minimum, a transport pass, funded training: in Geneva, CHF 2,000 to 5,000 a year is often won where the base salary is blocked.
  • Keep a 5 to 10% margin. Geneva employers expect a counter-offer; accepting the first number only costs the candidate.

Our recommendation to employers is the mirror image: publish a range in the advert. On the Geneva market of 2026, a role without a salary indication receives fewer qualified applications, and senior profiles no longer apply blind.

Frequently asked questions about salaries in Geneva

Short answers to the questions our consultants hear most often in interviews, and which are not covered above.

Is there a Geneva median salary for 2025 or 2026?

No. The earnings structure survey is biennial; the 2026 edition will be published in 2027. Any 2025 or 2026 figures in circulation are projections.

Does the public sector pay more than the private sector in Geneva?

Yes at the median: CHF 8,756 against CHF 7,125 in 2022, 23% more, according to FER Genève on OCSTAT data. The gap reflects the structure of public jobs (healthcare, teaching, qualified administration) more than a public-sector premium at equal role.

Is the 13th salary included in the CHF 7,893 median?

Yes, at one twelfth per month. A salary advertised over 12 months must therefore be increased by 8.3% before comparison.

How many employees receive a bonus?

Nearly one in three (32.6%) at Swiss level in 2024, with an average annual value of CHF 11,967 according to the FSO. In Geneva finance, variable pay is the rule above experienced level.

Can a summer job be paid below the minimum wage?

Since the amendment to the LIRT approved by popular vote on 8 March 2026, yes: at 75% of the minimum, i.e. CHF 18.44 an hour in 2026.

Does a Geneva cross-border worker pay income tax in France?

No. Geneva withholds tax at source on cross-border workers, unlike the cantons covered by the 1983 Franco-Swiss agreement. The worker then declares the income in France and receives a tax credit.
