The median gross monthly salary in the Greater Zurich region stands at CHF 7,502 for a full-time position, according to the 2024 Swiss Earnings Structure Survey published by the Federal Statistical Office on 25 November 2025. That is CHF 478 above the national median (CHF 7,024) and CHF 1,794 above Ticino (CHF 5,708). Yet this single figure hides three very different realities depending on whether you mean the canton, the city or the sector you work in. This article gives all three, explains where the Zurich premium comes from, and what a candidate should do with it when negotiating.
Key points
- Greater Zurich region 2024: CHF 7,502 gross a month, median, full time, 13th salary included. City of Zurich 2022: CHF 8,127, 16% above the Swiss level at the time.
- Close to half of the gap with the rest of Switzerland is explained by the structure of the Zurich economy (finance, IT, consulting, large companies); the other half is a pure location effect, strongest in low and middle salaries.
- A university degree is worth a median of CHF 10,838 in the city of Zurich, against CHF 5,092 with no completed qualification. The canton weighs less than the diploma.
Canton, city, Switzerland: the median changes with the perimeter
Salary comparators talk about "Zurich" without saying which one. Depending on the perimeter, the median moves by several hundred francs, and so does the reference year.
| Perimeter | Median gross monthly salary, full time | Year | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greater Zurich region (the canton, in FSO terms) | CHF 7,502 | 2024 | FSO, ESS 2024 |
| Canton of Zurich, cantonal analysis | CHF 7,500, against CHF 6,900 in the rest of Switzerland | 2024 | Statistical Office of the Canton of Zurich, June 2026 |
| City of Zurich | CHF 8,127 | 2022 | Statistik Stadt Zürich, 2024 |
| Canton of Zurich | CHF 7,114 | 2020 | Statistical Office of the Canton of Zurich |
| Switzerland | CHF 7,024 | 2024 | FSO, ESS 2024 |
The city's median is higher than the canton's because the head offices of banks, insurers and IT companies are in the city; Winterthur, the Oberland and the Weinland pull the cantonal figure down. A candidate targeting a job in Zurich-Nord or Oerlikon should compare with the city figure, not the canton's. The survey is biennial: the next median, for 2026, will be published at the end of 2027. Any "Zurich median salary 2026" read elsewhere is a projection. The difference between median and mean, and why the latter always overstates Zurich, is explained in our article on average and median salaries in Switzerland.
Where the Zurich premium comes from
The canton's statistical office published in June 2026 a breakdown of the CHF 600 gap between Zurich and the rest of the country. The result contradicts a common assumption: Zurich does not pay more because life is expensive there, or not only.
- 45% of the gap is down to the structure of the economy. Concentration of knowledge-intensive services (IT, telecoms, finance and insurance, consulting), presence of large companies that pay more than small ones, an above-average share of managers, and fewer jobs in manufacturing, construction and agriculture.
- 55% remains unexplained by structure. At comparable sector, education, age and function, Zurich companies pay more. The office attributes it to the suppliers and subcontractors of highly profitable firms, and to the cost of living.
- The effect varies with salary level. At the top of the distribution, structure explains almost everything; in low and middle salaries it explains little, and that is where Zurich really pays more for the same job.
- Gender, age, nationality and working percentage play only a marginal role in the regional gap.
For a commercial employee, a technician or a nurse, moving to Zurich therefore pays more, in proportion, than for a bank manager, whose high salary is explained mostly by the sector employing them, in Zurich as elsewhere.
What sector, diploma and function are worth
The cantonal median tells you whether an offer is off-market. To negotiate, you need to go down to the sector and the role. The FSO does not publish medians by sector for the Greater Zurich region alone; the Swiss figures below apply all the more closely the more a sector is concentrated in Zurich, which is the case for finance, IT and insurance.
| Criterion | Category | Gross median monthly 2024 | Perimeter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sector | Banking | CHF 10,723 | Switzerland |
| Pharmaceutical industry | CHF 10,159 | Switzerland | |
| Research and development | CHF 9,139 | Switzerland | |
| Construction | CHF 6,616 | Switzerland | |
| Retail / accommodation and catering | CHF 5,214 / 4,744 | Switzerland | |
| Education | University degree | CHF 10,838 (city of Zurich, 2022); CHF 10,533 (Switzerland, 2024) | |
| HES, higher vocational education | CHF 9,288 | Switzerland | |
| No completed vocational qualification | CHF 5,092 (city of Zurich, 2022) | ||
| Function | University degree and high management responsibility | CHF 14,409 | Switzerland |
| CFC without management function | CHF 6,162 | Switzerland |
The Swiss first decile is CHF 4,635, the ninth CHF 12,526. In Zurich both bounds are higher, but the gap between them is the same: the region does not narrow the distribution, it shifts it. The gender gap in the city of Zurich was CHF 1,466 a month in 2022 (CHF 8,901 against 7,435), without the city statistics measuring how much is explained by sector or part-time work.
What Zurich employees declare, occupation by occupation
The FSO does not go down to occupation level for the Zurich region alone. Job portals do, on a self-reported basis: jobs.ch holds 165,521 declared salaries for the canton of Zurich, with a central value of CHF 84,000 gross a year. These averages are not converted to full-time equivalents and cannot be compared line by line with the FSO median: the jobs.ch centre (CHF 84,000) sits below the annualised FSO median (CHF 90,024). They do give the benchmark by occupation that the FSO does not publish.
| Occupation | Declared average salary, canton of Zurich | Against the cantonal median of CHF 90,000 a year |
|---|---|---|
| Product manager / IT consultant | CHF 120,000 | +33% |
| IT project manager | CHF 109,179 | +21% |
| Software developer | CHF 101,836 | +13% |
| Mechanical engineer / system engineer | CHF 98,969 / 94,413 | +10% / +5% |
| Civil engineer / site manager | CHF 95,140 / 96,055 | +6% / +7% |
| Nurse | CHF 84,293 | –6% |
| Architect | CHF 81,809 | –9% |
| IT support technician | CHF 78,000 | –13% |
| Electrician / polymechanic | CHF 72,767 / 69,663 | –19% / –23% |
| Administrative assistant / commercial employee | CHF 69,630 / 66,000 | –23% / –27% |
| Logistics worker | CHF 62,400 | –31% |
| Nursing assistant / retail manager | CHF 57,676 / 54,156 | –36% / –40% |
Basis: jobs.ch, canton of Zurich, declared averages, 2026, 13th salary and bonus included as declared. The reading that matters: IT and consulting pull the canton up, healthcare sits at the median, and retail, logistics and basic care occupations are below the median even in Zurich. A logistics worker does not earn CHF 7,500 a month because they work in Zurich; they earn a little more than in Bern, for a much higher rent.
From the median to the bank account: a Zurich employee in 2026
The median is gross, 13th salary included at one twelfth per month. Here is what it becomes for Jonas Keller, 34, team leader in the logistics arm of a retailer in Zurich-Altstetten, living in Dietikon, married with no children, his wife working at 60%. Contractual salary: CHF 90,024 over 13 months, exactly CHF 7,502 a month annualised, on a permanent full-time contract.
| Line | 2026 rate | Monthly amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gross monthly salary | CHF 7,502 | |
| AVS / AI / APG | 5.3% | – CHF 398 |
| Unemployment insurance | 1.1% | – CHF 83 |
| Non-occupational accident cover | ≈ 1.3% | – CHF 98 |
| LPP pension, employee share, age 35-44 | 5% of coordinated salary (CHF 64,260) | – CHF 268 |
| Net before tax | CHF 6,655 |
The gross salary lost 11.3% in contributions before tax. The tax itself depends on the municipality, marital status, permit and church affiliation: a Zurich resident files a tax return, a B-permit holder is taxed at source, and the municipal multiplier moves the bill by several thousand francs a year between the city of Zurich and the lakeside municipalities. The only reliable figure is the canton's official calculator, with the exact municipality and situation; we do not publish an estimate in its place. The deductions are detailed in our article on gross and net salary in Switzerland. What that net allows once tax, rent and health insurance are paid is another question, which we cover separately.
Negotiating in Zurich with the median in hand
A cantonal median is not something you negotiate, but it frames the conversation. On the assignments we handle in Zurich, the candidates who land the top of the range use the figure in the same way.
- They start from the median of their sector and their diploma, not the cantonal median. An HES IT graduate who quotes CHF 7,502 undervalues themselves by CHF 2,000 a month.
- They state a gross annual figure over 13 months. Zurich employers think that way and read a monthly request as a lack of preparation.
- They check whether a collective agreement applies. Banking, insurance, hospitality, construction and retail have grids; IT and consulting do not, and negotiation there is free.
- They price the bonus separately. A third of Swiss employees receive one, worth CHF 11,967 a year on average; in Zurich finance it is part of the package and is negotiated alongside the base.
- They keep a 5 to 10% margin. Zurich companies expect a counter-offer and usually have a budget reserve to meet it.
The full method, with the mistakes that cost the most, is in our article on negotiating and renegotiating your salary. An employer who publishes the range in the advert receives more qualified applications in Zurich than one who hides it; that is the advice we have given our clients for two years, and the response figures prove them right.
Frequently asked questions
The questions that come up when a candidate prepares a negotiation in Zurich.
Does the Zurich median salary include the 13th salary?
Yes, at one twelfth per month, along with the employee's social contributions and non-periodic payments. Exceptional bonuses and paid overtime are not included.
Is there a minimum wage in Zurich?
The canton has none. The cities of Zurich (CHF 23.90 an hour) and Winterthur (CHF 23) voted a municipal minimum in 2023; the Federal Supreme Court upheld it on 10 June 2026 after the cantonal administrative court had blocked it, and both cities can now bring it into force. Outside those municipalities, collective agreements set the floors.
Is the median different for foreigners?
At Swiss level, B-permit holders in senior positions earn more than Swiss nationals; without management responsibility, they earn less. The Zurich cantonal office found no notable effect of nationality on the regional gap.
Where can I find a median by occupation for Zurich?
In Salarium, the FSO calculator, which filters by major region, sector, education, age and function. Job portal calculators rely on voluntary declarations, without adjustment for working percentage, and are not comparable line by line with FSO medians.
Are Zurich salaries rising faster than elsewhere?
Between 2020 and 2024 the cantonal median went from CHF 7,114 to 7,502, up 5.5%; the Swiss median rose 5.4% over the same period. The pace is the same, the level gap remains.
