Key points

  • Average reported gross annual salary: CHF 93,314 (279 salaries), from CHF 75,000 early in a career to CHF 129,285 after 21 years.
  • The federal diploma of tax expert takes 2 to 4 years to prepare and costs up to CHF 33,500, of which the Confederation refunds at most CHF 10,500.
  • OECD minimum tax, individual taxation, the end of imputed rental value: advisory work will keep growing until 2032.

A tax specialist (fiscaliste) advises individuals or companies on their taxes, prepares their returns and defends their positions with the tax authorities. In Switzerland, with 26 cantonal tax laws on top of federal law, there is no shortage of work.

Tax specialist, fiduciary or tax lawyer

All three work on the same files, but not in the same role. The distinction matters for anyone entering the profession, because it decides which qualification to aim for.

Profile Core of the job Typical training Employers
Tax specialist / tax adviser Advice, planning, complex returns, dealings with the tax authorities Law or economics, then the federal diploma of tax expert or a MAS in taxation Advisory firms, fiduciaries, banks, multinationals
Fiduciary agent or expert Accounting, payroll, routine returns for SMEs and individuals Federal certificate as fiduciary agent, diploma as fiduciary expert Fiduciaries
Tax lawyer Litigation, appeals, tax criminal proceedings Master's in law, bar exam Law firms, advisory firms
Tax assessor / tax jurist Auditing and assessing taxpayers Law, economics or in-house training Cantonal tax authorities, Federal Tax Administration

Both sides of the table are hiring. A few years in a tax administration remain an excellent accelerator for an advisory career: you learn how the other side reads a file.

What a tax specialist does

  • Individuals: returns with wealth, property or foreign income, withholding tax on salaries, pension buy-ins, estates, voluntary disclosure.
  • Companies: profit tax, VAT, withholding tax on dividends, stamp duties, restructurings, transfer pricing.
  • International: double taxation treaties, cross-border commuters, expatriates, minimum tax for groups.

The tax expert diploma: cost and payback

The benchmark qualification is the tax expert with federal diploma, obtained through an advanced federal professional examination. In French-speaking Switzerland, EXPERTsuisse prepares candidates in Epalinges, in blended learning and alongside work, over 2 to 4 years and 12 modules: VAT, individuals, companies, intercantonal and international tax law, tax criminal law.

To sit the exam, you need a federal certificate as fiduciary agent or as specialist in finance and accounting, a college diploma in business economics, or a bachelor's or master's in law or economics, plus at least four years of qualified tax experience, two of them in Switzerland or Liechtenstein. For the university route, the University of Geneva offers a MAS LL.M. in tax law (60 ECTS, in French, CHF 27,500 for the 2027-2028 intake).

Calculation. The preparatory course costs CHF 33,500 for a non-member. The Confederation refunds 50% of course fees, capped at CHF 21,000 for an advanced professional exam, so at most CHF 10,500, provided you sit the exam. The remaining cost falls to CHF 23,000. Between 3-5 and 9-11 years of experience, the average salary rises by CHF 19,700 a year. If the diploma goes with that step, it pays for itself in just over a year. Some employers also contribute to fees, in exchange for a commitment to stay a few years. Already know the Swiss federal diploma route? It also opens the door to the exam.

Reforms 2024-2032: why tax specialists are in demand

Three major reforms are arriving at the same time. Each creates work for thousands of taxpayers and companies.

  • OECD minimum tax. Since 1 January 2024, Switzerland levies a top-up tax that brings taxation of groups with at least EUR 750 million in turnover to 15%, and has applied the income inclusion rule since 2025. Multinationals need tax specialists who can run the calculations and the filings.
  • End of imputed rental value. Approved by the people and the cantons in September 2025, the abolition takes effect on 1 January 2029, according to the Federal Council's decision of 1 April 2026. Mortgage interest deductions also largely disappear: homeowners will ask when to repay their debt and when to carry out renovation work.
  • Individual taxation. Approved on 8 March 2026 with 54.23% yes, it ends joint taxation of married couples. Cantons must adapt their laws by 1 January 2032 at the latest. Every married couple will become two files.

On top of this comes remote work by French cross-border commuters: since 1 January 2026, an amendment to the France-Switzerland tax treaty sets a 40% annual remote-work threshold, and Geneva employers must track each employee's days. FAQ: tax specialists in Switzerland

Can you become a tax specialist without a law degree?

Yes. The federal certificate as fiduciary agent or as specialist in finance and accounting also gives access to the tax expert exam, after four years of experience.

Do you need to speak German?

Not for a local job in French-speaking Switzerland. For companies active in several cantons, German is a real advantage.

What is the difference with a certified accountant?

The certified accountant audits accounts; the tax specialist handles tax. Both federal diplomas are prepared with the same body, and the certified accountant salary gives a point of comparison.
