Accounting assistant and SME accountant positions are accessible without a qualification, while regulated roles such as licensed auditor and certified public accountant require specific qualifications. With 5 years of experience, including 3 in commercial work, the CFC can be obtained without an apprenticeship. Without any basic qualification, 6 years of qualified experience can also provide access to the Federal Diploma of Specialist in Finance and Accounting, opening the door to positions above CHF 95,000.

Yes, you can work in accounting in Switzerland with no qualification at all. The job is not regulated: no law requires a CFC or a federal diploma to keep the books of an SME or prepare a VAT return. What the law closes is the auditing of accounts and the title of certified public accountant (expert-comptable diplômé). Between those two limits, everything depends on what recruiters accept, and on the federal pathways that give you a qualification while working, without an apprenticeship.

What the law allows and what it forbids

The confusion comes from France, where the chartered accountant belongs to a professional order. In Switzerland the function is free; certain titles and one specific activity are not.

Function or title Legal requirement in Switzerland Basis
Accounting assistant, accountant, head of accounting in a company or fiduciary firm None. The employer sets its own criteria Unregulated profession
Self-employed bookkeeper (bookkeeping, VAT returns, payroll) None, apart from commercial register entry and Anti-Money Laundering Act compliance if acting as a financial intermediary Unregulated profession
Title "Specialist in Finance and Accounting with Federal Diploma" Passing the federal professional examination VPETA, examen.ch examination rules
Title "Certified Public Accountant" (expert-comptable diplômé) Passing the advanced federal examination, protected title VPETA art. 36, EXPERTsuisse
Licensed auditor (limited audit) One of the qualifications in art. 4 AOA + 1 year of supervised practice AOA art. 5
Licensed audit expert (ordinary audit) Certified public accountant; or federal diploma as fiduciary, tax or finance and controlling expert + 5 years; or federal diploma in finance and accounting, HES or university degree + 12 years AOA art. 4

In practice, an accountant with no qualification can keep the books of a ten-person Sàrl from start to finish, but will never sign its audit report. That ceiling is legal, not cultural, and no amount of experience gets around it.

The positions that are genuinely open without a qualification

Dario Antunes, 34, ran the dining room of a restaurant in Renens for eight years. In 2024 he joined a six-person fiduciary firm in Lausanne as an accounting assistant, at CHF 58,000 over 13 months, with nothing more than rigorous cash-handling and solid Excel skills. Eighteen months later he handles the bookkeeping for twenty client files on his own, plus the VAT returns. We see this path every month at Fed Finance: the first tasks in an accounting department are learned on the job within a few months.

  • Posting supplier and customer documents, matching, bank reconciliations
  • Invoicing, reminders, receivables follow-up
  • Preparing VAT returns (effective method or net tax rate method)
  • Preparing payroll under supervision: AVS, LPP, LAA, withholding tax
  • Interim closings prepared for a diploma-holding accountant or an auditor

What remains closed without a qualification, by the market rather than the law: sole accountant roles above fifty people, client portfolio manager in a fiduciary, management control in industry. The adverts require the federal diploma and recruiters do not read applications that do not mention it. The classic mistake here is applying for those roles rather than the entry-level ones, then concluding that "the market is closed".

Three Swiss routes to a qualification without stopping work

Adult certification rests on two articles of the Vocational and Professional Education Ordinance and on federal examinations open to practitioners. Three routes matter for accounting, with the conditions the French-speaking cantons apply in 2026.

Route Admission conditions Duration Cost to the candidate What it opens
Commercial employee CFC by direct admission to the final exam (art. 32 VPETO) 5 years of experience, including 3 in the commercial field; French B1 12 to 24 months of evening courses, then final exam Courses funded by the canton (GE, VD, FR, NE); materials CHF 350 to 1,000 Recognised basic qualification; federal diploma admission after 3 years instead of 6
Validation of prior learning (art. 31 VPETO) 5 years of experience, including 2 to 4 in the profession; competence portfolio assessed by experts 1 to 3 years depending on prior learning Funded by the canton of residence The same CFC, without a classic final exam
Federal Diploma of Specialist in Finance and Accounting, with no basic qualification 6 years of qualified practice at 80% or more in accounting, fiduciary work or tax (double the requirement with a CFC); Excel expert or SIZ certificate; leadership module 2 to 3 years of evening classes Courses CHF 12,000 to 19,000, 50% reimbursed by the Confederation (max CHF 9,500); exam fee CHF 2,000 Head of accounting, client portfolio manager, management controller roles

Our recommendation is clear-cut: do not aim for the federal diploma directly at six years. Take the CFC via article 32 from year five, in funded courses, then move on to the diploma after three years of practice. The detour costs eighteen months of funded evening classes, and you reach the diploma with a basic qualification the market can read, whereas the direct route at six years leaves you with nothing to show for the whole period. The detailed conditions of the diploma, its real cost and the salary jump it produces are in our article on the Swiss federal diploma in finance and accounting. Private accounting assistant certificates are a good signal for a recruiter, but replace no federal qualification and unlock no subsidy.

What the missing qualification costs, in figures

The 2024 Swiss Earnings Structure Survey settles the debate. At national level, a CFC holder earns a median of CHF 6,390 gross per month; in Geneva, someone without a completed vocational qualification sits at CHF 5,294 against CHF 6,945 with a CFC. That CHF 1,650 monthly gap is the price of the qualification at equal responsibility. On our grid, an accounting assistant starts between CHF 58,000 and 65,000; an experienced accountant who can close the books alone reaches CHF 85,000 to 95,000; beyond that, the federal diploma becomes a written condition in the adverts. The starting point and the steps of the entry-level role are detailed in our guide to accounting assistant salaries in Switzerland.

Back to Dario, and the maths on the diploma. Courses in Lausanne: CHF 15,000 over two years. Federal subsidy paid after sitting the exam, pass or fail: CHF 7,500. Exam fee: CHF 2,000. Net cost: CHF 9,500, plus 400 hours of evenings. On the other side, on our assignments, the diploma moves an experienced accountant from CHF 85,000 to at least CHF 100,000 within the year. Gain: CHF 15,000 gross in the first year. The diploma pays for itself in under twelve months.

Where experience outweighs the qualification

Some employers hire on the ability to do the work, others on the title. You need to know which one you are addressing before sending an application.

  • SMEs of 5 to 30 people and tradespeople. A sole, versatile accountant, judged by the owner on the books they can see, not on a title. The best entry ground without a degree.
  • Small fiduciary firms, for bookkeeping. The role plateaus quickly, but two years of bookkeeping in a fiduciary are worth more to a recruiter than a private certificate.
  • Associations and foundations. Fund accounting, grants, project budgets: skills that schools do not teach and that a candidate from the non-profit world already has.
  • Start-ups. They hire a "finance office manager" before their first diploma-holding accountant; the person who built invoicing and payroll grows with the structure.
  • Self-employment. Nothing prevents you from keeping clients' books without a qualification, but from the first Sàrl client you will need a licensed auditor as a partner for the audit you cannot sign.

Our position at Fed Group: large companies, banks and audit firms are not the target for a profile without a qualification. The paths that lead there later are set out in our article on how to become an accountant in Switzerland.

The application that gets past the first screen without a degree

With no title to display, the application has to prove competence where a graduate can rely on a heading. What we ask of the candidates we present:

  • Software named with context: Abacus, Crésus, Winbiz, Bexio, SAP, and the volume of client files or entries per month.
  • One line per task done alone, not "participated in": VAT return filed, closing prepared, payroll calculated for how many people.
  • A work certificate that explicitly mentions the accounting activities. Without it, the experience does not exist for article 32 or for the federal diploma.
  • Proven Excel level: pivot tables, XLOOKUP, consistency checks. A practical test at interview is common.
  • Certification already under way, with the cantonal admission date. A candidate enrolled under article 32 is no longer "without a degree": they are qualifying.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions our consultants hear most often on this subject.

Can you become a certified public accountant with no degree at all?

No. The advanced federal examination requires a prior qualification (federal diploma, HES or university) and several years of audit practice. The federal diploma in finance and accounting is the compulsory step for someone who started without a qualification.

Can a cross-border worker take the CFC via article 32?

Yes in the canton of Vaud, provided the job is located there. The other French-speaking cantons require residence; check with the cantonal vocational training office.

Does a private accounting assistant certificate count towards the federal diploma?

Yes, provided it is recognised by the examination board and corresponds to at least two years of training. It then reduces the practice requirement from 6 to 3 years.

How long does it take to go from zero to a diploma-holding accountant?

Between seven and nine years combining the routes: entry as an accounting assistant, CFC via article 32 around year five, federal diploma three years later.
