What the role actually covers, and why that sets the pay
Accounting assistant, accounts clerk, administrative assistant with bookkeeping duties, junior accountant: four titles for different realities, and salary grids that merge them are meaningless. The dividing line is not seniority, it is the year-end close.
| Role | Actual scope | Indicative range |
| Administrative assistant with bookkeeping | Administrative duties with some data entry; accounting is a minority of the job | Administrative grid, below the accounting assistant |
| Accounting assistant | Data entry, invoicing, bank reconciliation, VAT preparation. Does not close the books alone | CHF 70,000 – 85,000 |
| Qualified or certified accountant | Independent through to the year-end close, VAT, complex payroll | CHF 90,000 – 115,000 |
| Head of finance or chief accountant | Group reporting, internal audit, team management | CHF 120,000 – 160,000 and above |
Our position at Fed Finance: if an accounting assistant advert mentions closing the annual accounts independently, it is not an assistant role, it is an accountant's role priced one band down. That is the first thing to check before discussing any figure. The full grid by function is in our Swiss accountant salary guide.
The statutory floor many adverts ignore
Switzerland has no federal minimum wage, which is why fanciful ranges circulate on entry-level roles. Five cantons do impose a statutory floor, and it applies to every employer regardless of size or sector.
| Canton | 2026 hourly minimum | Annual equivalent at 42 h/week |
| Geneva | CHF 24.59 | ≈ CHF 53,700 |
| Basel-Stadt | CHF 22.20 | ≈ CHF 48,500 |
| Jura | CHF 21.40 | ≈ CHF 46,700 |
| Neuchâtel | CHF 21.35 | ≈ CHF 46,600 |
| Ticino | CHF 20.00 to 20.50 by sector | ≈ CHF 43,700 to 44,800 |
The city of Lucerne has applied a communal minimum of CHF 22.75 since 1 January 2026. Everywhere else, absent an applicable collective agreement, pay is freely negotiated which does not mean without reference points.
These figures work as a credibility test. An accounting assistant role in Geneva advertised below CHF 53,700 full time is unlawful. One at CHF 58,000 is lawful but well below the market for the job: at that point, ask what the role actually covers, because the answer is usually that it is an administrative function. The cantonal detail is in our article on minimum wages in Switzerland.
Gross to net: what actually remains
A gross range says nothing until it has been through the contributions filter. Take an accounting assistant aged 35, no children, on CHF 78,000 gross over thirteen instalments, or CHF 6,000 a month. 2026 rates.
- Old-age, disability and loss-of-earnings insurance, 5.3 % on the full gross: CHF 4,134
- Unemployment insurance, 1.1 % up to CHF 148,200: CHF 858
- Non-occupational accident insurance, 1.0 % as an indication, depending on the employer's policy: CHF 780
- Occupational pension, 5 % employee share on the coordinated salary (CHF 78,000 − CHF 25,725 = CHF 52,275): CHF 2,614
Total: CHF 8,386, or 10.8 % of gross. That leaves CHF 69,614 net before tax, roughly CHF 5,355 a month across thirteen payments. Communal tax then applies and, at this salary level, weighs more than a CHF 2,000 difference in advertised gross. Two offers at CHF 76,000 and CHF 78,000 in different communes can easily swap places once tax is included. The full method is in our gross-to-net calculation for Switzerland.
Moving up: the only three levers that count
The lists of salary factors circulating on this role run to a dozen. At entry level, only three produce a measurable jump.
Autonomy on the year-end close
This is the lever that changes the band, not the figure. Moving from "prepares the closing schedules" to "closes the books independently, subject to review" shifts you from CHF 70,000-85,000 into CHF 90,000-115,000. That is not a pay rise, it is a change of role, and it is obtained by asking for it explicitly often by first agreeing to do it under supervision.
The federal certificate, with its real conditions
The official title is "Specialist in finance and accounting with federal certificate", placed at level 6 of the national qualifications framework. Three entry conditions for the examination, none of which can be worked around: a recognised qualification, three years of qualified experience at 80 % minimum in accounting, fiduciary work or taxation, and a clean record for professional activity.
The practical consequence for an assistant is a timetable rather than an immediate choice: the three years of qualified experience accrue while you hold the role. The full route, its real cost and the federal subsidy covering 50 % of it are set out in our article on the Swiss federal certificate in finance and accounting.
The ERP, provided you know what you are selling
Writing "proficient in Abacus, Sage, Winbiz" on a CV is worth nothing. What is worth something is stating the module used, the role held on it and the volume handled: "supplier entries in Abacus, around 400 documents a month, across three entities" can be verified and gets paid. A list of software with no level and no volume is the first sign of an application that will not progress.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Swiss commercial apprenticeship enough to work as an accounting assistant?
In most cases yes, particularly with an accounting specialisation or experience. What blocks entry is not the qualification but the absence of demonstrable practice on accounting software and on real day-to-day transactions.
What is the pay difference between an accounting assistant and an administrative assistant?
An administrative assistant combines admin work with data entry and sits on an administrative grid; an accounting assistant has a purely accounting scope. The gap comes from the scope, not the job title: a role labelled accounting assistant but 70 % administrative will be paid as administrative work.
Is a foreign accounting qualification recognised for this role?
There is no automatic recognition and the occupation is not regulated: employers judge case by case. A formal recognition application is only worth filing to access Swiss higher education or a regulated profession.
Is a temporary assignment worth taking to get into accounting?
It is often the shortest route at this level, particularly through cover during closing periods. An assignment gives access to real transactions and a verifiable reference, neither of which an entry-level application has.
Is the 13th salary included in the ranges quoted?
It depends on the advert, and it is the first thing to clarify. The difference between twelve and thirteen instalments is 8.3 %, more than most annual increases. Always ask whether the advertised gross covers twelve or thirteen months.
