Switzerland's existing stock of around one million fossil-fuel boilers is the main source of activity for HVAC engineering firms, with roughly 4–5% replaced each year. New construction is no longer the only major driver. The MoPEC 2025, adopted in August 2025 and progressively incorporated into cantonal legislation from 2026, strengthens energy requirements and promotes renewable heating. Job titles vary considerably: an HVAC Manager earns around CHF 106,000 gross/year, an HVAC Technician around CHF 91,000, while HVAC Engineer/Project Manager roles in French-speaking Switzerland start at approximately CHF 82,000.

What an HVAC engineer actually does, and what has changed

The classic definition  designing and sizing a building's heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems  is still accurate and no longer describes the working day. Since regulation started prescribing energy outcomes rather than means, the value in the role has shifted upstream and downstream of the sizing itself.

Our position at Fed Engineering: the line between an HVAC engineer paid mid-range and one paid at the top is neither seniority nor qualification. It is the ability to carry a file end to end, including the energy justification submitted to the canton and the commissioning. A profile that stops at sizing remains a technical executor in a market that needs project owners.

The regulation that redistributes the workload

This is the engine of the profession, and it is rarely explained properly in job adverts. Two instruments shape the French-speaking Swiss market.

MoPEC, and what the 2025 version changes

The cantonal energy regulations model is a harmonised text that each canton then transposes into its own energy law, at its own pace. The 2025 version was adopted by the plenary assembly of the Conference of Cantonal Energy Directors on 29 August 2025, and the first cantons can transpose it from 2026.

The point few candidates use in interview: the effect of the renewable threshold is documented. Under the 10 % requirement of MoPEC 2014, over 80 % of replacements already go renewable; at 20 %, the share exceeds 90 %. In other words, the constraint does not create advisory demand, it moves it upstream  to choosing the variant, running the payback calculation and assembling the subsidy file.

The deadline that shapes order books

By 2050 at the latest, no Swiss building may be heated with fossil CO₂ emissions. Set against the existing stock  around one million fossil boilers, 4 to 5 % replaced a year  that implies a replacement rate that has to accelerate, on a building stock that almost always requires a study before works.

In practical terms for an engineer: renovation will account for the bulk of the workload for years, not new construction. What an HVAC engineer really earns in Switzerland

The first obstacle is not a lack of data, it is the job title. "HVAC engineer", "HVAC project manager", "HVAC technician" and "HVAC manager" describe different scopes on different grids, and the averages in circulation merge them.

As with the other technical roles we track, the best-paying cantons are neither Geneva nor Zurich but Aargau and Appenzell Innerrhoden. The reason is the same: where design offices are scarce, the price of the profile rises. The Lake Geneva region concentrates employers, therefore candidates, which compresses entry ranges.

Gross to net on an experienced profile

Take an experienced HVAC engineer aged 38, no children, on CHF 115,000 gross paid over thirteen instalments. 2026 rates.

  • Old-age, disability and loss-of-earnings insurance, 5.3 % on the full gross: CHF 6,095
  • Unemployment insurance, 1.1 % up to CHF 148,200: CHF 1,265
  • Non-occupational accident insurance, 1.0 % as an indication, depending on the employer's policy: CHF 1,150
  • Occupational pension, 5 % employee share on the coordinated salary capped at the mandatory ceiling (CHF 90,720 − CHF 25,725 = CHF 64,995): CHF 3,250

Total: CHF 11,760, or 10.2 % of gross. That leaves CHF 103,240 net before tax, roughly CHF 7,942 a month across thirteen payments. The deduction rate falls mechanically at this salary level because the mandatory coordinated salary is capped. An employer offering an enhanced pension plan raises the visible deduction but also the retirement savings  the element most often overlooked when comparing two offers. Recruiting an HVAC engineer: what blocks and what unblocks

On the employer side the pattern is consistent across the mandates we handle: the talent pool is not empty, it is badly targeted by the adverts. Three corrections produce a measurable effect.

  • Name the actual scope of the role. An "HVAC engineer" advert with no indication of the phase  design, construction, operation  attracts all three populations and convinces none. State whether the role includes managed commissioning: it is the most discriminating filter in the profession.
  • State the building type. A hospital, a data centre, a residential block and an industrial hall involve neither the same standards nor the same instincts. A specialist candidate either recognises themselves in the advert or moves on.
  • Say whether the role covers the subsidy file and the cantonal energy justification. It is the rarest skill and the one that justifies the top of the range. Omitting it means losing the profiles who hold it.

On budget, apply the same reasoning as for other technical roles: the full cost of an engineering post, employer contributions, workstation and licences included, sits at around 1.2 times the advertised gross. Training and specialisation: the routes that count

The profession is entered from several starting points, and the route matters less to the range than the specialisation chosen afterwards.

One financial point rarely used: the Confederation refunds 50 % of preparatory course fees for federal examinations, up to CHF 9,500 for a certificate and CHF 10,500 for an advanced diploma. The invoice must be issued in the candidate's name, never the company's  an employer settling the institute directly costs the employee that money. Frequently asked questions

Do you need a federal institute degree to work in a Swiss HVAC design office?

No. Swiss design offices mostly recruit applied sciences graduates and technicians, and the profession is not regulated for this kind of role. What filters at entry is the ability to produce a defensible sizing calculation and to hold a file in front of the cantonal authority.

Is a foreign building services qualification recognised in Switzerland?

There is no automatic recognition and the occupation is not regulated: employers judge case by case. A formal recognition request is only worth filing to access Swiss higher education or a regulated profession.

Is BIM essential for an HVAC engineer?

It has become so on projects above a certain size, but the value gap is not in modelling. It is in coordinating between models and arbitrating clashes between building services and structure. Modelling can be learned; coordination gets paid.

Which specialisation offers the best prospects?

Energy renovation of the existing stock, because it is driven by a dated regulatory constraint and by a stock of a million boilers to replace. Critical-building specialisations  healthcare, cleanrooms, data centres  remain the best paid but cover a smaller volume of roles.

Is the job exposed to automation?

Calculation and modelling are progressively automating. Choosing the variant, the liability engaged by a signature and the relationship with the cantonal authority are not. Those three things are what the top of the range pays for.
