What the Vaud job market is actually saying in 2026
Pages competing on this search display a vacancy counter and stop there. The figure that matters for a decision is not how many adverts were live on a Tuesday morning: it is the direction of travel, and how the cantonal statistics should be read because they are more misleading than they look.
A Vaud unemployment rate that is not comparable with other cantons
At the end of June 2026 the canton of Vaud counted 19,917 unemployed people, a rate of 4.7 %, up 0.5 points over twelve months. That places Vaud among the highest cantons in Switzerland, just behind Geneva. Except that the cantonal employment directorate states it plainly itself: Vaud is one of the few cantons that counts people who have exhausted their unemployment entitlement. Applying the method used by most cantons, the Vaud rate would fall to 4.2 %.
| Indicator (canton of Vaud) | June 2025 | June 2026 |
| Published unemployment rate | 4.2 % | 4.7 % |
| Rate on a basis comparable with other cantons | 4.2 % | |
| Registered unemployed | 19,917 | |
| Jobseekers registered with regional employment offices | 30,442 | |
| Vacancies notified to those offices during the month | 3,037 |
The nuance has a direct use in interviews. A Vaud-based candidate told that "the market is difficult where you are" is arguing against a figure inflated by a statistical convention. Saying so calmly, with the source, changes the conversation.
What the notified vacancies indicate
Vaud employers notified 3,037 positions to the regional employment offices in June 2026 alone, up 6.8 % on the month. Volume is holding, but it is shifting: the monthly falls in unemployment are concentrated in construction and hospitality, not in office functions. For finance and accounting the reading is clear. The flow of openings has not dried up, it has become more selective. Pure data-entry roles are thinning out; profiles that close the books independently, handle VAT and consolidate remain hard to fill.
What a finance and accounting profile really earns in Lausanne
The ranges circulating on job-listing pages are drawn from individual adverts, which produces figures accurate to the franc and worthless statistically. The data below combines aggregated declarations for the canton of Vaud and for the city of Lausanne. They are indicative, not prescriptive.
Observed ranges, by percentile
| Benchmark (accountant, Lausanne) | Gross annual | Gap to the average |
| First quartile (25 % earn less) | CHF 72,500 | −12.7 % |
| Average reported in Lausanne | CHF 83,000 | reference |
| Third quartile | CHF 95,000 | +14.5 % |
| Ninth decile | CHF 106,500 | +28.3 % |
| Canton of Vaud average, all sectors | CHF 81,938 | −1.3 % |
Note the amplitude: a 31 % spread between the first quartile and the ninth decile, for the same job title. Seniority does not explain that gap. The combination of a federal qualification, autonomy on closing and command of an ERP does. Our accountant salary guide for Switzerland sets out the steps canton by canton.
From gross to net: a worked example for an experienced Lausanne profile
Take an experienced accountant, 40 years old, no children, on CHF 92,000 gross paid over thirteen instalments, or CHF 7,077 gross a month. The rates applied are those in force in 2026.
- Old-age, survivors' and disability insurance plus loss-of-earnings, 5.3 % on the full gross: CHF 4,876
- Unemployment insurance, 1.1 % up to CHF 148,200: CHF 1,012
- Non-occupational accident insurance, 1.0 % as an indication, depending on the employer's group policy: CHF 920
- Occupational pension, 5 % employee share on the coordinated salary (CHF 92,000 − CHF 25,725 = CHF 66,275): CHF 3,314
Total social deductions: CHF 10,122, or 11.0 % of gross. That leaves CHF 81,878 net before tax, roughly CHF 6,298 a month across thirteen payments. Cantonal and communal tax comes on top, and it differs noticeably between Lausanne, Pully and Écublens. A candidate comparing two offers CHF 3,000 apart without factoring in the commune of residence is comparing two meaningless numbers. Our gross-to-net calculation method for Switzerland works through each line.
The federal diploma: the one pay lever that holds when the market tightens
When the market is buoyant, you gain 10 % by changing employer. When it tightens, that lever is the first to disappear: companies stop bidding against each other. Our position at Fed Finance has been consistent for two years, and 2026 confirms it: in the Lausanne area, the most reliable return is not mobility, it is federal certification.
What the Confederation actually refunds
Since 2018 the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation has covered 50 % of preparatory course fees for federal examinations, capped at CHF 9,500 for a federal diploma of higher education (brevet fédéral) and CHF 10,500 for an advanced federal diploma. The cap is reached at CHF 19,000 of eligible course fees. The subsidy is paid after the examination and a point almost nobody flags regardless of the result. Failing the exam does not forfeit the refund.
The arithmetic is then straightforward. On a CHF 19,000 programme, the net cost after subsidy falls to CHF 9,500. On a CHF 92,000 salary, a 10 % rise on obtaining the qualification is CHF 9,200 a year: the investment pays back in a little over twelve months. At 15 %, in eight. No change of employer produces that return in a market running at 4.7 % unemployment.
The invoicing mistake that costs CHF 9,500
A case seen twice this year on Vaud assignments. An employer agrees to fund an employee's federal diploma, settles the training institute's invoice directly, and the employee discovers after the exam that nothing can be claimed: the federal subsidy is paid to the person in training, never to a third party, and the invoice must be issued in the candidate's name and private address.
- Check that the course appears on the list of preparatory courses recognised by the State Secretariat before enrolling a course off the list creates no entitlement.
- Insist that the invoice is made out in your own name and to your private address, even where the employer contributes.
- If the employer co-funds, put it in writing: you settle the invoice, the employer reimburses its share.
- Keep the proof of payment issued by the training institute and the examination decision issued by the examining body.
- File the claim after the examination; payment normally follows within three months, four at year end.
The subsidy also counts as taxable income in the year it is paid, which is worth anticipating. The full route is described in our article on the Swiss federal diploma in finance and accounting.
Which employers are actually hiring in the Lausanne area
The Vaud employer base does not look like Geneva's, and confusing the two wastes candidates' time. Lausanne is not a wealth management centre. Finance and accounting hiring there splits across four families, with very different pay and career logics.
| Type of employer | What it offers | What it demands in return |
| Regional fiduciary firms | Fast skill build-up, exposure to many client files, frequent funding of the federal diploma | Sharp seasonal workload, entry salaries below the median |
| Vaud SMEs in industry and services | Full autonomy, standalone role, proximity to management | Everything from data entry to closing, limited team prospects |
| Multinationals and shared service centres | Top of the salary range, international ERPs, IFRS | Working English non-negotiable, narrow specialisation |
| Public sector and institutions | Stability, stronger pension terms, predictable hours | Slow, grade-bound pay progression and long selection processes |
A candidate targeting the Lausanne ninth decile should be positioning on the last two families. A candidate targeting fast access to the federal diploma has more to gain from the first.
Applying in Lausanne: what actually makes the difference
We read hundreds of finance and accounting applications a year across the Lake Geneva basin. The gap between a file that progresses and one that does not sits almost always in the same places, and rarely where candidates look for it.
| Element | What works | What costs you the interview |
| Scope described | "Independent monthly closing, 4 entities, VAT included" | "General accounting" with no volume or autonomy indicated |
| Tools | Name the ERP and the version, state the role held on it | Listing eight packages with no proficiency level |
| Swiss qualifications | State the federal diploma in progress with the target exam year | Implying automatic equivalence for a foreign qualification |
| Languages | CEFR level plus the professional context of use | "Fluent English" unsupported, tested in thirty seconds of interview |
| Availability | The exact notice period under the Code of Obligations | "Immediately" while a three-month notice period is running |
A concrete example from this spring, on an experienced accountant role west of Lausanne: two applications with near-identical backgrounds, ten years of experience each. The one invited in specified the number of entities closed and the VAT scope; the other wrote "general and accounts payable accounting". The client did not hesitate for a minute. The scope you describe is worth more than ten years of seniority stated without content.
Frequently asked questions
Is a French or Belgian accounting qualification recognised in the canton of Vaud?
There is no automatic recognition: accounting professions are not regulated in Switzerland. Employers assess the background case by case. A formal recognition request is only worth filing for regulated professions or for admission to Swiss higher education.
Do you need to live in the canton of Vaud to apply in Lausanne?
No, and the Lausanne market recruits widely from Fribourg, Valais and the Chablais. The commune of residence does determine taxation, however, which can amount to several thousand francs a year at identical gross pay.
Is the 13th salary compulsory in finance and accounting?
No law requires it. It becomes due once it appears in the contract, in company rules or in an applicable agreement. In the Lausanne area it is close to universal in accounting roles: an offer that does not mention it deserves a written question before signing.
How long does a finance recruitment process take in Lausanne?
Allow six to ten weeks from first contact to signature for an accountant role, longer for a management position where an assessment is usually added. The candidate's contractual notice period then applies: that is where timelines slip, rarely during selection.
Is a fiduciary firm or a company the better place to start?
A fiduciary firm trains faster and exposes you to more files, at the cost of pronounced workload peaks. A company offers a narrower scope but better visibility on the organisation. For anyone targeting the federal diploma within three years, the fiduciary route is the shortest.
